Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman

Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman is one of the oldest surviving traditional Malay houses. It was originally built early 1900 and located in Kampung Sungai Kechil, Kedah. It was owned by the local headman named Abu Seman, hence the name of the house. It was rescued, relocated and restored in Kuala Lumpur by Badan Warisan Malaysia.

Today, it stands as one of the finest remaining examples of Malay vernacular architecture. Located in the middle of the rows of skyscrapers in Kuala Lumpur, the house is surrounded by a traditional herb and heritage garden. The garden is a home to 50 species of local trees and plants.

The house is accessible by public transportation. The nearest station is KLCC LRT Station.

Roof tile. Interesting tidbit, you only have one person install the roof. The tiles, when wet, are bent around the person's thigh, meaning each tile has to be that exact size/curve. Multiple tile guys, mis-fitting tiles, leaky roof. Dining area. Since you sit on the floor, the windows are low, letting you see what's going on outside. All clever designs borne of experience.

Such a lovely kampung house amidst the city centre. I admire the carving of the house and this reminded me of En's long overdue request for a set of carving tool!!
