Dewan Filharmonik Petronas
Dewan Filharmonik Petronas is Malaysia's first concert hall built for classical concert venue. The 865-seat hall is located at the podium level between the PETRONAS Twin Towers. It is the home of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), and has hosted many of the world's leading orchestras.
The concert hall was officiated in 1998 by the patron of Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali and her husband Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who is a Prime Minister of Malaysia.
The concert hall was designed by Cesar Pelli based on the inspiration from the traditional shoebox shape of the 19th century European classical music halls. It has the capacity to accommodate for 920 seats which includes box seats, corporate suites and a royal suite.
The stage floor is designed for flexibility, is at approximate of 297 meter square, and can be extended to 369 meter square. On the other hand, the orchestra pit was designed to accommodate only up to 45 musicians. However, with the stage extension,it is able to place larger orchestra and choruses.
The most unique feature of the hall is the concealed movable ceiling panels which can be adjusted to alter the volume in the hall and simulate a wide range of acoustic environments. The movable panels allow changes in the acoustics of the room to suit small scale music concerts to large orchestra concerts. The State-of-the-art acoustics ensure audiences remain enthralled by the orchestra’s and visiting artists’ presentations of classical pieces. The acoustical technique was designed by Kirkegaard Associates.
DFP is accessible by Public Transportation. The nearest station is KLCC LRT Station.

Hear From Others
The acoustics within the concert hall are superb, with a clear direct sound where one could hear every instrument, every note and with the absence of even the slightest echo. Just as pleasing was the educated audience who knew not to applaud in-between movements. They rightfully saved their appreciative applause for the end of each piece.
I arrived on time and was seated by 2.45 pm. I started to marvel at the magnificent interiors of Dewan Philharmonic. Unlike most European theatres, this was purpose built from scratch and not renovated through the centuries. The famous West End theatres in London were built in the 19th century or even earlier but ours is relatively brand new. So the acoustics are perfect since every detail had been seen to.

Make no mistake, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is a class act. And what a pleasure it is to experience the 13-year-old orchestra in his home, the magnificent Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP), once the envy of Singaporeans in those seemingly long pre-Esplanade years.
