National Museum

The National Museum is located in building that features traditional Minangkabau architecture with its distinctive Minangkabau-styled roof. It stands in the heart of Kuala Lumpur as a repository for the country’s rich historical heritage from the prehistoric time till the recent event.

Muzium Negara was officiated by His Majesty, the Third Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Syed Putra Al-Haj Ibni Al-Marhum Syed Hassan Jamalullail on 31st August 1963.

The museum building presents a panoramic view of the development of Malaysia. The murals of Italian glass mosaic which extend across the museum facade, highlights the significant events and crafts of Malaysia.

After its recent upgrade in 2008, the Museum has become a more interesting and interactive venue for visitors, taking them on an exploration of Malaysia’s history beginning from the prehistory period to Malaysia today. There are 4 main galleries in the main museum. They are "Early History", "The Malay Kingdom", The Colonial era" and "Malaysia Today".

The museum is accessible by public transportation. The nearest stations are Muzium Negara MRT Station and Kuala Lumpur KTM Komuter Station.

The best exhibits to check out? The Early History gallery, with artifacts from neolithic and Bronze Age cultures, and the Malay Kingdoms section, which depicts the rise of Islamic kingdoms within the Malay Archipelago.

Established in 1963, the National Museum is on the site of the Selangor Museum which dated back to 1906. The original was bombed by a US B-29 bomber, destroying the right wing of the museum and the rest was flattened at the end of the war.
